On June 1, 2025, the No. 3 gasifier of the Xiamen Xiangsheng Circulating Fluidized Bed Coal Gasification Project, constructed by ZHGAS was shut down for maintenance. Since its commissioning on March 9, 2021, until this shutdown, this gasifier had achieved 1545 days of continuous and stable operation, setting a new operational record for itself and establishing a new benchmark for the industrial application of CGAS circulating fluidized bed coal gasification technology. It is noteworthy that the continuous operation time of the project's No. 1 and No. 4 gasifiers both exceeded 700 days, while the No. 2 gasifier approached 600 days, demonstrating an overall trend of long-term, safe, and stable operation, which highlights the reliability of CGAS technology.
This project is located in Konowe County, Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is ZHGAS's first overseas project to materialize in response to the "Belt and Road" initiative. It is planned to construct a supporting coal gasification plant for a local integrated stainless steel smelter with an annual output of 2.5 million tons. The industrial gas produced will serve as fuel for the rotary kilns in the workshop's nickel-iron production line. The local lignite has a high moisture content of up to 40%, and due to its flammable, friable, and poor slurry-forming characteristics, it is unsuitable for gasification processes such as fixed-bed, entrained-flow with water-coal slurry, or entrained-flow with dry powder. ZHGAS utilized CGAS technology to build four pulverized coal gasifiers for the owner, each with a capacity of 80,000 Nm3/h. This technology fully leverages the high reactivity of lignite and can accept raw coal with high moisture content, allowing it to enter the gasifier without prior drying, thus achieving clean and efficient utilization of local low-grade coal.
Since its official commissioning in 2021, the project has operated smoothly with excellent performance indicators. Previously, the owner utilized a pulverized coal injection process to supply heat to the rotary kilns. This process had certain requirements for the quality of raw coal, resulting in higher raw material costs. Furthermore, the direct injection of pulverized coal into the kilns for combustion, along with the noise and dust generated during the pulverization and injection processes, severely polluted the local environment and jeopardized the health of operating personnel. After gas replaced pulverized coal, raw coal costs were significantly reduced, and pollution issues were simultaneously resolved. This greatly freed up the refinery's labor force, increased the plant's level of automation, and ensured the quality of the final product. The operational results have been highly praised by the owner.
The long-term stable operation of the Xiamen Xiangsheng project marks a significant success for CGAS technology in the industrial application of high-moisture lignite gasification, further validating its coal adaptability. Prior to this, the technology had already demonstrated its gasification capabilities for high-alkali coal at the Xinjiang Yihua project and anthracite coal at the Guizhou Hongsheng project, respectively, establishing its broad adaptability to multiple coal types. Leveraging its technological advancement and environmental advantages, CGAS technology has successively been included in prestigious lists such as the National Recommended Directory of Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reducing Technologies and Equipment in the Industrial and Information Technology Sector, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's First Batch of Advanced and Applicable Technologies, the National Comprehensive Service Platform for the Transformation of Ecological and Environmental Scientific and Technological Achievements, Advanced and Applicable Technologies for 'Waste-Free City' Construction (by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment), and Anhui Province's 'Five One Hundreds' Advanced Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Technologies, truly becoming a model for clean production technology.
In recent years, ZHGAS has accelerated its overseas expansion, with multiple projects successfully implemented. CGAS Technology has consequently become a representative achievement of Chinese coal gasification technology 'going global'. Looking ahead, ZHGAS will continue to deeply cultivate technological innovation, leveraging its core technological advantages to expand into global markets. The company aims to facilitate the successful establishment of more high-quality gasification projects, offering more competitive Chinese solutions and wisdom for the green transformation of the global energy and chemical industry.
